SAPPI are the world’s largest manufacturer of dissolving wood pulp from their two mills in Southern Africa (Saiccor and Ngodwana Mills) and in North America (Cloquet Mill).
We installed seven fixed monitoring stations around the Saiccor plant at Umkomaas which monitor sulphur dioxide levels. Weather stations were also installed. The system has automated data loggers which send readings back to the factory via a radio link on a leased frequency. In addition there is a GSM modem which sends data continuously 24hrs a day to a remote FTP server. There are also 8 pole-mounted early-warning stations which will send out alerts if a gas leak occurs and SO2 levels become dangerously high.
